Overnight Stays: From the Evening Lift to the Breakfast Room

Most overnight stays begin somewhere between seven and ten in the evening. Some start with dinner in the city or a drink in the hotel bar, others begin quietly in the room with room service. The late evening is for conversation and unwinding, the night for proper rest, and the morning for a slow breakfast, in the breakfast room or delivered to your door.

The end time is agreed in advance and usually falls after breakfast. If you have an early flight or a morning meeting, tell us when you reserve, and we will shape the booking so that you are not rushing for the airport train.

For many guests, breakfast turns out to be the part they remember most: a table by the window, the city waking up below, and someone to talk to before the day begins.

For a whole night, temperament matters more than anything else. Most hotels are entirely relaxed about a guest staying the night, but a few points help. If your room is booked for one person, check whether your hotel asks for a second guest to be registered and whether breakfast for two should be added. Mention any early checkout or late departure when you reserve. In Oud-Zuid and along the canal ring, grand hotels handle this without a second thought, while at Schiphol an overnight often ends with an early flight, which we plan around.

Mornings in a hotel have their own gentle choreography. Breakfast rooms tend to be busiest around nine, so an earlier table or a tray brought up to the room keeps things peaceful. Your companion leaves at the agreed time, discreetly and without fuss, while you pack or head down to checkout. Should you want to linger over coffee a little longer, ask on the night rather than in the morning, since her plans for the next day may already be set.
